Following graduation from the University of Sydney in 1940, Charles Ashur Sara spent two years at the Royal South Sydney Hospital before joining the military. He received the Pacific Star, the War Medal, the Defence Medal, and the Australian Service Medal for his military service during World War 2.

After his military service, he worked as Honorary Medical Officer at the South Sydney Hospital, and in 1948 was appointed Honorary Anaesthetist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, a position he held for the next thirty years.

In 1949 Sara gained his Diploma of Anaesthesia at the University of Sydney and subsequently was appointed Honorary Anaesthetist to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, retiring in 1983.

During his career he held a number of appointments, including at the Concord Repatriation Hospital, and United Dental Hospital, Sydney. From 1966 to 1975 he was lecturer in anaesthesia for dental surgery with the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Sydney.

In 1975 Sara was awarded the Belisario Award of the Australian Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia and Sedation in Dentistry, for “outstanding contribution in the field of Dental Anaesthesia and Sedation”. In that same year, he was also awarded the Robert Orton Medal, the highest honour of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
