Michael Joseph Davies was born in Kyabram, Victoria, in 1945. He graduated from the University of Melbourne, MB BS, in 1968, and spent the following year as a Resident at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. He was elected to the Board of the Faculty of Anaesthetists at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1985, was a member of the inaugural Council of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 1992, and was appointed President in 1993.

Michael Joseph Davies was born on 8th April, 1945, in Kyabram, Victoria. He completed secondary school at St Kevin’s College in Melbourne and enrolled in medicine at the University of Melbourne, graduating MB BS in 1968. During 1969, Davies was a Resident Medical Officer at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, followed by positions as an Anaesthetic Registrar also at St Vincent’s Hospital, as well as the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital between 1972 and 1975.

In 1976 he spent some time in the United States, working as a Staff Anesthetist at Massachusetts General Hospital and as Instructor in Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. He returned to Melbourne in 1978, taking up a position as Staff Anaesthetist at St Vincent’s Hospital. At the same time, Davies became a member of the Victorian Regional Committee, taking on a number of roles with the Committee, including Continuing Education Officer (1978 – 1983), Deputy Chair (1981 – 1983), Lecturer First Part (1978 – 1980), and Lecturer Second Part (1978 – 2007).

Davies was elected to the Board of the Faculty in 1983, where he again took on a variety of roles including Treasurer in 1988.

 

In 1992, he was elected Vice President of the newly formed Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and, in 1993, took on the role of President, overseeing the relocation from Royal Australasian College of Surgeons to the new College site in the heritage-listed Ulimaroa at 630 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. At the completion of term as President, Davies resigned from the College Council.

Throughout his career, Davies developed and maintained interest in a range of areas, such as vascular and cardiac anaesthesia, monitoring during anaesthesia, blood conservation, coronary artery disease and phaeochromocytoma. These interests have seen him active in a number of committees, including the Open Heart Surgery Unit Advisory Committee for University of Melbourne Hospitals (1985 – 1994), the Medical Advisory Committee (1994 – 1997, 2006 – ), the Medical Appointments and Clinical Practice Review Committee (1999 – 2000), and the Patient Care Review Committee (1999 – 2000), among others. Davies’ also lectured at the University of Melbourne from 1999 – 2010.

Michael Joseph Davies retired from practice in [2010?] and continues to live in Melbourne enjoying golf, travel and grandparenting.
