Eric Neville Harle Gandevia was born on August 28, 1891 in Branxholme. He graduated from the University of Melbourne with a MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree in 1919. By 1945 he had attained the position of Honorary Anaesthetist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
