After graduating from the University of Sydney in 1938, Robert Bradley Speirs joined the Australian Army. At the end of the war, Speirs returned to Sydney, where he took up the position of Temporary Honorary Relieving Assistant Anaesthetist; a position he held for three years. Although, as was usual at the time, Speirs held a number of concurrent positions, including Honorary Assistant Anaesthetist at the Royal South Sydney Hospital.

In 1950 Speirs graduated from the Diploma of Anaesthesia at the University of Sydney.
