Henry Edward Martyn Williams joined the 1 New Zealand General Hospital in Egypt between 1941 and 1944. On return to New Zealand, he took up the position of visiting anaesthetist at Dunedin Hospital, as well as working in private practice.

Williams relocated to Melbourne in 1950 where, while working at the Alfred and Royal Melbourne hospitals, he also gained his Diploma of Anaesthesia from the University of Melbourne.

In 1964 Williams moved to Christchurch where he shared his time between anaesthesia and private practice. In 1980 he resigned from Christchurch Hospital, but maintained his general practice for a number of years Williams also had strong associations with the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists, becoming its sixth president between 1962 and 1964.
