Erin Michael Griffin completed his medical studies at the University of Otago in 1929, graduating MB ChB. He moved to Wellington in 1937 to take over a general practice which included a large component of both obstetrics and anaesthesia.

The following year he became Visiting Anaesthetist at both Wellington Hospital and Calvary Hospital, the Home of Compassion, as well as other private hospitals. 

Griffin was a foundation member of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, gaining his fellowship in 1954.
