After graduating from the University of Otago in 1950, David Govett Romaine Wright spent two years at Wellington Hospital before heading to England where he undertook postgraduate training in anaesthesia. In 1956, Wright gained admission to fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons.

1956 was the same year he returned to New Zealand, taking up a full time post at the Wellington Hospital, which became a visiting position in 1958, along with Bowen and Calvary hospitals. Wright continued in these positions until 1968.

In addition to hospital work, Wright also worked with Royal New Zealand Air Force, providing anaesthesia for ophthalmic surgery in South East Asia, and with the New Zealand Red Cross in Samoa.

Wright was president of the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists from 1981 to 1982, and was awarded life membership in 1986.
