Charles Joseph James Morkane was born in 1916 in New Zealand. He completed his MB ChB (Bachelor of Medicine, Masters of Surgery) at the University of New Zealand in 1942. By 1947 he was the first full time specialist anaesthetist practicing in Christchurch. Morkane was awarded his Diploma of Anaesthetics in 1950 by the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Morkane was also a significant figure in the development and running of many early anaesthetic societies. He was a board member of the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1960 to 1967 and was President of the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists in 1966 to 1968.
