Alfred Norman Slater was born on November 13, 1900 in Dunedin, New Zealand. He graduated from Otago Medical School in 1918 and moved to Wellington ten years later. Whilst in Wellington, Slater was a honorary visiting anaesthetist and became the foundation secretary-treasurer of the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists. From 1956 to 1957 he became President of the society. His service led to life membership in 1969. In recognition of his work in New Zealand, Slater was nominated a Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
