He graduated from Otago Medical School in 1918 and moved to Wellington ten years later. Whilst in Wellington, Slater was a honorary visiting anaesthetist and became the foundation secretary-treasurer of the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists. From 1956 to 1957 he became President of the society. His service led to life membership in 1969.
