He completed his MB ChB (Bachelor of Medicine, Masters of Surgery) at the University of New Zealand in 1942. By 1947 he was the first full time specialist anaesthetist practicing in Christchurch. Morkane was awarded his Diploma of Anaesthetics in 1950 by the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Morkane was also a significant figure in the development and running of many early anaesthetic societies.
