After attending Geelong Grammar School he graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1929. In 1936 he travelled to Edinburgh to receive his postgraduate qualifications in medicine. His first professional appointment was at the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary and Royal Hospital Wolverhampton. He remained in London during the war period working at the London Emergency Medical Service at West Middlesex Hospital. Returning to Australia in 1949, he was the inaugural director of anaesthesia at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
